Two years of Flood & Civil: reflecting on the journey so far

January marked the two-year anniversary of Flood & Civil. It took a little breathing space—and some time to reflect—to fully appreciate and celebrate the milestone.

Looking back, it has been a fantastic journey.

Flood & Civil began in fairly humble circumstances. I still remember working late into the night—while on holiday—collaborating with trusted colleagues on a bid, using my wife’s very old (and frankly awful) laptop. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was the start of something exciting.

From there, things gathered pace quickly. What began as a one-person operation soon turned into a steady stream of projects and, inevitably, many more “uncivil” hours than I care to count. Before long, we had moved into office space alongside our friends at Momentum Structural Engineers, and the company evolved from a one-man army into the diverse and energetic team of four we are today.

And that original bid? We never actually won it.

But in hindsight, that hardly matters. The opportunities that followed have been incredibly rewarding.

Over the past two years we’ve been fortunate to work on a wide range of projects—from householder developments to strategic flood alleviation schemes, schools and commercial sites. We’ve contributed to £200m+ mixed-use developments, riverside parks, and residential projects, each bringing its own challenges and learning opportunities.

Along the way, we’ve also continued to grow our expertise. Developing our capabilities in areas such as flood modelling and nutrient neutrality has allowed us to broaden our service offering and provide greater value to our clients.

Whether delivering a feasibility study, supporting a planning application, or progressing through detailed design, our aim has always been the same: to approach every challenge with intuition, creativity, and efficiency. Receiving such positive feedback from clients and collaborators along the way has been incredibly encouraging.

Most importantly, the vision I had when starting Flood & Civil is beginning to take shape.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the people involved. I’m hugely grateful to our fantastic team—Jiaxi Zheng, Matthew Butt, and Maria Carrasco Gigante—as well as to the clients who have trusted us with their projects and the collaborators who have supported us along the way.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey so far.
